Things you should know before you get started

  • most textbooks assume that you’ve already mastered Hiragana and Katakana
  • most people get all excited over kanji but don’t neglect your studies concerning the Japanese grammar

Kanji

A lot of people occupy themselves by asking absurd questions of how they will ever be able to memorize them, how they will ever be able to write them etc. instead of just getting started.  What I’m going to say may seem trite but the most important thing is to get rid of your fear. As long as you feel intimidated by their number and appearance, you’ll never manage to learn them. Just take it easy and get information on how they evolved etc., so you get to know how the system works. Once you’ve mastered the first 200-300 characters, it’s getting a lot easier.
